In the explosion of alternative rock bands  there were many female figures, singers and songwriters, which achieved great notoriety. Among them was patti smith and PJ (Polly Jean) Harvey, with their rock raw, direct and visceral.

Patti Smith is an American poet, singer and visual artist. Called the "Godmother of Punk", she became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
I totally recomend to watch her documentary Dream of life directed by Steven Sebring.
I discovered Patti not so long ago, and that was curious as I am  person that enjoy very much punk rock. Anyway, she really touch me with her simple but very powerful way of been always...showing that what you need is QUALLITY..and she go it....Her lyrics are amazing....we are lucky to still enjoy this leyend of the music....The Documentary is very good and the photography its amazing...

PJ Harvey With their first album proved one of the most influential songwriters of the 90s with lyrics that explore themes such as sex, love, religion, black humor and sensitivity in femininity.
I m defently a fan number one of PJ Harvey....She simply rocks!..Lyrics, voice, attitude...
